Meet Nicki – The Boa that started All About Boas
Nicki holds a special place in my heart as my very first Boa Constrictor. The story of our journey together began in a quaint pet store in sunny Florida, where I, a novice enthusiast, stumbled upon this captivating creature. At that time, my knowledge of boas was limited; I had experience with colubrids in the past, but owning a "Colombian red-tail boa" had always been a dream since the '90s when I first laid eyes on them in pet stores.
Then, fate intervened. There she was, Nicki, coiled elegantly in the store, her vibrant presence instantly capturing my attention. It was indeed love at first sight! Back then, I was oblivious to the intricacies of boa genetics. The tank bore a cryptic label, "Nic Mix poss het...," indicating some mysterious lineage, a puzzle I hadn't yet learned to decipher. Ignorance, they say, is bliss, but little did I know that this moment would kick-start my deep dive into the enthralling world of boas.
My initial setup for Nicki was humble – a 20-gallon long glass tank procured from the very store where I found her. Alongside it, I collected what I thought were the "necessary" accessories. However, my early days as a boa owner quickly taught me crucial lessons. One of the first revelations was the significance of maintaining proper humidity levels for these tropical beings. Armed with newfound knowledge, I explored innovative solutions. A layer of hydro balls, sourced from a hydroponics and gardening store, proved to be a game-changer, ensuring a consistently moist environment beneath the bedding without fostering the dreaded mold.
Understanding Nicki's needs became my top priority. I provided her with two cozy hides and a variety of branches, offering her both the freedom to exercise and the security of concealment. These elements, I discovered, were fundamental to a snake's well-being, promoting not only physical health but also a deep sense of contentment and security.
Nicki's presence in my life marked the beginning of an incredible journey. From those early days of ignorance, I delved passionately into the realm of boas, absorbing knowledge, embracing challenges, and building a profound bond with these magnificent creatures. Join me in celebrating the beauty of boas, where each encounter teaches us something new and deepens our understanding of these extraordinary serpents.
All About Boas was started in the USA. And in 2020, we moved the company and all the animals to our new home in Stuttgart, Germany.
